Beauty School Requirements: Everything You Need to Know

Did you know that the hairstyling and cosmetology industry is growing at 19 percent, which is much faster than other jobs? So if you have ever been interested in applying to beauty school to get the training you need to help people look their best, now is the right time.

But what are the beauty school requirements and what can you expect once you graduate? Let us look closer at this exciting industry that is at the forefront of all things beauty-related.

Beauty School Requirements

When you think about taking beauty school classes, you may be more worried about cost or asking yourself “is it right for me?” but there are some requirements you have to fulfill for admission. Read on for a comprehensive look at how to be the perfect candidate.

Age Requirements

To be eligible to apply to beauty school, most states require you to be 16 years old or older. Some schools have cosmetology programs that do not require a minimum age, but you always want to check with the state board of cosmetology to see if the classes will be valid.

Remember that no one is too old to start beauty school, so give it a shot!

Assessment Tests

Most beauty schools have a requirement of a high school diploma. Beyond this, there will be assessment tests to ensure the student has the minimum requirements for admission.

You need to have problem-solving abilities, know math (just some, so don’t get too frightened!), as well as reading and writing.

Some schools might require some basic computer skills. In each area, the student will have to pass the minimum score to be admitted. But if you do not get the minimum score, there is no need to panic because you can take preparatory classes to help you boost those scores up.

You can always get more information by reaching out to the school you are interested in.

Application

Most beauty schools have an application you have to fill out. They may also require other paperwork, like your high school diploma or the equivalent.

What You Can Expect

Beauty school is school. It meets regularly, usually five times a week, and you are expected to attend all of the classes. To be able to graduate from beauty school, you have to attend at least 90 percent of the classes and complete a number of weeks.

You can expect hands-on learning in your classes. You will practice on mannequins, even your fellow classmates and real salon guests in our stunning student salon training area under supervision.

When you graduate, you will not actually have a degree because there is no beauty degree. What you will have is a license that allows you to work in the beauty industry.

But what about the cost? If you cannot afford the cost of beauty school, you can always apply for grants. Many schools offer Pell Grants and Federal Financial Aid options to students who qualify, so do inquire.

Start Your Beauty School Journey

Beauty school can offer you the chance to enjoy an exciting career in the beauty industry. By knowing what the beauty school requirements are and what you can expect, you can get started without any delays.

At The Salon Professional Academy in Melbourne, we can offer the training you want and we can also offer financial aid options to students who qualify. Contact us today to learn more about our classes!

Hair Colorist: The Lessons Behind the Career

Steps to Becoming A Professional Hair Colorist

Although people have been coloring their hair for thousands of years, modern advancements now allow you to achieve any hair color possible. With so many new and exciting hair coloring products, experts at Technavio expect the global hair color market to grow by 13.75 billion dollars by 2025.

This rise in market value also means that there will be a rise in hair colorist job opportunities. So, if you’ve ever wanted to become a hair colorist, then now is the time to make it happen.

If you’re interested in a career in hair coloring but are unsure where to start, then this article is for you. Here are the steps you need to take to become a hair color specialist to set you on the right path.

Sign up for Cosmetology School

The first step is to enroll in a cosmetology school like the Salon Professional Academy of Melbourne, Florida.

But why would you need to go to cosmetology school if you want hair stylist training? The answer is simple; before you learn about hair color, you must learn the basics of hairstyling. This is because the two go hand in hand and are both necessary to learn to create complete looks for your clients.

TSPA instructors are trained in the latest hair trends to help you start your career as a professional hair colorist on the right foot. You’ll learn popular hair color techniques like balayage, ombre, and sombre.

Moreover, as a TSPA student, you’ll get hands-on training in a professional salon environment. But your journey doesn’t end when you complete your training and graduate.

Pass the State Board Licensing Exam

Once you finish cosmetology school, you’ll need to pass the State Board exam to earn your official license and start working with clients. Each state has its own requirements of how many training and practice hours you have to do to earn your cosmetology license.

In addition to your hair colorist training, your TSPA instructors will be able to prepare you to ace your State Board exam.

Earn Your Hair Color Certification

The final step is to earn your hair color certification. Your certification is different than your cosmetology license and equally as important. While you’ll get basic hair colorist training in cosmetology school, you may consider going through more specialized hair color schooling for licensed professionals to become a leading professional hair color specialist.

Become a Hair Colorist by Following These Steps

Now that you know what steps are necessary to become a hair colorist, you’re ready to turn your hair coloring dreams into a reality.

There’s no better place to start your journey than with TSPA. TSPA graduates have limitless cosmetology career opportunities after they complete their training.

Beauty Degree Is There Such A Thing?

Is there Such a Thing as a Beauty or Cosmetology Degree?

The average woman spends more than $3,700 per year on her appearance. Clearly, it’s lucrative to get into the beauty field — and that’s just one reason to consider getting your cosmetology or esthetician’s license.

You don’t need a cosmetology degree to pursue a beauty career. Instead, you need the proper licensing from your state. It is the training and education in a beauty or cosmetology school that prepares you for a career in the beauty industry. Once you have your license, there are so many ways that you can pursue your passion for beauty and the healthy payments that could come with working in such an in-demand industry.

Want to know what careers you can enjoy with a beauty school certification? Here are some of the best ideas:

A Specialty in Hair

Most of those who work toward a cosmetology license dream of becoming hairstylists. And any good beauty school will provide you with robust training in hairstyling, both cutting and coloring hair.

Once you learn how to cut and style hair to your client’s liking and receive your license from the state, you have so many directions to take your career. Aside from traditional in-salon hairstyling, you might become a fashion stylist, preparing models for photoshoots or catwalks. You could do the same for brides-to-be, working on location on their big days to get them ready.

Plenty of trained hair stylists have branched out into other exciting and lucrative careers, ranging from influencers to marketing consultants to on-camera stylists for TV. It all starts with a cosmetology training course.

A Specialty in Skincare

Let’s say you imagine a slightly different career in beauty. If you’ve been on any social media platform in the past two years, you’ve probably noticed the world’s increasing fascination with , and willingness to spend big on  skincare. Perhaps you’ve built up a detailed skincare regimen that has you glowing, and you want to share it.

You won’t study cosmetology to care for clients’ skin, though. Instead, you’ll focus on esthetics. Training in esthetics will teach you how to cleanse and enhance all skin types, and you’ll also learn how to paint on that canvas — makeup skills come into play here, too.

With this training under your belt, you can do so much. You can work in a spa as the resident facialist, or you can do makeup for photoshoots and events.

And don’t forget that you can bring your unique skincare skills to social media and make a star of yourself there, too. Sharing your skincare tips through Instagram or a blog will help you shape the future of products and applications.

You could land yourself a magazine-writing gig or product-development role once people respect your opinions, the choice is yours.

You Don’t Need a Beauty or Cosmetology Degree

No matter which of these jobs you want, one thing is true: you don’t need a cosmetology degree to make it happen. Instead, you need training from a respected beauty school, which will get you ready to obtain your license and move on to a rewarding career in beauty.

That’s where we come in. Click here to contact The Salon Professional Academy today to see what we can do for you and your career in cosmetology, esthetics, or nail care.

Keep reading to learn more about the current most lucrative self-employment opportunities in the beauty industry.

Is a Beauty Career Right for Me?

For many, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, trips to the beauty counter are now digital. This change has created a bounty of self-employment opportunities in beauty. Some of the most lucrative beauty career opportunities at the moment that allows you to earn money from home include skincare or makeup blogging, makeup consulting, and working as a makeup artist for hire.

Is It Easy To Start a Career in Beauty?

It may seem hard enough to choose what career path you want to pursue. Yet, it can seem even more impossible to try to figure out how to get your new career started.

You could train yourself, but the best way to prepare for a career in beauty is to get your beauty training at an accredited school. By getting your education in beauty, as a self-employed worker you’ll have access to a larger amount of business opportunities. Moreover, you’ll have access to more high-paying business opportunities that’ll help advance your career. A degree is not required.

Many famous beauty bloggers gain their following without having a beauty degree. But the advantage of having a beauty education as a skincare or beauty blogger is that you’ll appear more credible to your audience. Likewise, skincare and beauty brands will be more likely to collaborate with you if they see you as an authoritative figure in your industry.

Do I need a Beauty Degree?

No, a degree is not required, an education specializing in beauty prepares you to earn a license to practice your skills. If you don’t want to become a traditional hair stylist or barber, then there are many other beauty careers that you can pursue. For example, you could become a product developer, face painter, or beauty care blogger when you get your education in the beauty industry.

The Best Paying Jobs in the Beauty Industry

How much can you make in the beauty industry? That’s a great question. And, it’s one that a lot of friends and loved ones ask our students as they pursue beauty industry careers.

While we’d like to say your salary will match your work ethic, the truth is certain jobs within the beauty industry are considered high-paid positions.

Keep reading and find out which beauty jobs will help you to make the most money possible once you graduate from beauty school.

Makeup Artists

One of the  lucrative career opportunities for beauty students is becoming a makeup artist. Makeup artists can fill a variety of roles. You can choose to be a makeup artist for film, TV, or special events.

Weddings are one of the biggest markets for makeup artists. Brides deserve to look breathtaking on their special day. Beauty school graduates can make that happen once they hone their skills when it comes to makeup artistry.

As of this writing, the average salary for a makeup artist is $75,730 a year*. Now, we know different areas of the country have different cost of living requirements. But, regardless of where you call “home”, $75,000 a year is nothing to sneeze at!

Nail Artist

When students ask “how much can you make in the beauty industry”, they rarely think of doing nails. It may shock you but becoming a nail artist is another well paying path you can take upon graduating beauty school. The demand for people getting their nails done is growing by the day.

Notice we said people. Students in this industry regularly find themselves serving both women and men. Men who travel from meeting to meeting in business boardrooms want to make sure their hands are well-manicured. Many of them believe the hands say a lot about the person they’re about to do business with.

Of course, there is still a large market of ladies who continue to get their nails done. These customers will be coming back routinely to get their nails done over and over. They’ll also be returning customers for maintenance and fill-ins and any special occasion.

Have you ever had a nail crack shortly after getting them done? What do you do? You make an emergency appointment to go back in and get your nail fixed.

Talk about job security! This demand for talented nail artists, and the flexibility of the hours, means there’s virtually no limit to the income you can make in this field.

Fashion Stylists

Do you have an eye for the latest trends in hair fashion, styles and outfits? If that sounds at all like you, then this might be your thing.

Fashion stylists take the latest outfits and make them look better. These are the people who take fashion models and make them absolutely stunning as they take to the runway.

This role can come with some pressure, however, because fashion stylists are responsible for a person’s complete look. They need to integrate everything from outfit to makeup, to hair and all the way down to accessories.

Taking on the responsibility of a model’s entire look for the runway can pay well. Currently, the average salary for a Fashion Stylist is $62,500* per year.

Not bad for getting to play “dress up” with beautiful people and beautiful outfits all day!

Career Opportunities & Beauty Education

The beauty industry is constantly growing; like many projects, it’ll be worth more than $800 billion by 2025. This is part of the reason why so many are pursuing a career in the beauty industry.

But is it worth going to school for cosmetology? Why should I go to school for it if I want to break into the beauty industry?

When it comes down to it, the beauty industry is a complicated field with many moving parts. Proper education can do wonders for those looking to excel in this profession.

Read on to find out why education in the beauty industry is so crucial in 2021.

Growth of the Beauty Industry

When we talk about the beauty industry, we don’t exclusively mean salons and in-person businesses. Those places will remain important for years to come. But we have to consider how technology contributes to the current beauty landscape.

Beauty entrepreneurs and educators like Huda Kattan are worth millions of dollars. Why? Because she could leverage her blogs and industry knowledge to reach a wide audience.

All beauticians should know how cosmetology and technology go together. This is why the beauty industry is taking off and why education is so crucial.

What Would I Learn At Beauty Schools?

But what specifically would you learn in contemporary beauty schools?

For starters, beauty technology is becoming more efficient than ever. Consumers want the best products for their hair, skin, and other cosmetics.

Beauty schools are instrumental in teaching you how to master those skills and giving you insights into social media and other aspects of digital marketing.

There’s a reason why Instagram and TikTok influencers are helping drive the beauty market. Leveraging a digital audience is becoming a must in today’s beauty landscape.

You also have to learn about virtual consultations, something that’s becoming important post-pandemic. You might even get to learn about how AR and artificial intelligence affects beauty products.

It all comes down to what your beauty school’s offering. Most have robust sets of classes that’ll help you stay ahead of the competition.

Why Education in the Beauty Industry is Crucial

So what are the benefits of getting more education in the beauty industry?

For those who are already experienced in cosmetology or hairstyling. You can enter the market ahead of other professionals because you get expert advice from the best teachers out there.

Beauty schools also provide key insights into technology and digital marketing. It’s no secret that that’s become so crucial in today’s beauty landscape. Knowing how to market yourself is an indispensable skill.

These skills also help you keep up with the latest trends. The things you learn in beauty school are generally scalable regardless of whether you own your own salon or are running an online store.

Types of Licenses in Florida

Cosmetology License

A Cosmetology License is the most popular type of beauty license offered in Florida, and it’s no wonder why! With a wide scope of specialties and skills there are many more career options available to cosmetologists in Florida than with any other beauty license.

Some of the skills that are required for cosmetologists to master include the following.

  • Hair Shampooing
  • Hair Coloring
  • Hair Cutting
  • Hair Removing
  • Hair Relaxing
  • Pedicuring & Manicuring
  • And so many more!

Very attractive man who also cuts hair. Which is ironic because he has none.

Full Specialist

A Full Specialist focuses more on the health of the skin and nails. Many of the skills in this license are sought after in spas and nail salons through the state.

Some of the skills that a full specialist is expected to master includes:

  • Manicuring & Pedicuring
  • Facials
  • Makeup
  • Waxing
  • Acrylics

The Full Specialist license is a combination of two other licenses offered by the state of Florida. Both the Facial Specialist and the Nail Specialist licenses are included in the Full Specialist license, making this endorsement a great investment for you.

For more information on these licenses and many of the others offered in Florida please visit their site.

The Licensure Process

Once you have found the license that works for you and will help you reach your dreams, obtaining the required education should be the next thing on your mind. While you are on your journey toward finding your perfect school for you we invite you to visit The Salon Professional Academy campuses in Melbourne and Delray Beach. Take a look into our facility and into the education and support that we dedicate to each of our students. Schedule your tour today!

Depending on the license you are working toward you will be required to meet different educational training hour requirements. For the cosmetology program there is a 1200 Hour Training Requirement. These hours are broken up into two areas of focus to help the future stylists make the most of their education.

Foundational Courses

To become a master in any field you first need to focus on the basics. Nowhere is that more true than in cosmetology. Having a healthy knowledge of chemical processes, color interactions, skin health, sanitation, and more are vital building blocks that every cosmetologist needs.

These foundational skills do more than help the student provide quality services, they help them build the knowledge that could lead to a successful career.

Technical Skills Courses

Once students have mastered the foundational skills that can help them become the strong beauty professionals they dream of being, students are then taught many of the technical skills that help to create the student’s talent.

From cutting to styling and chemical processes these skills are first taught in a classroom before students begin transitioning toward mastering their skills in the student salon training area.

The time spent in the student salon training is valuable to each student so as to help them master their craft as they prepare to sit for their state board exam.

The Exam Process

In addition to completing the required 1200 hours of training and education, the state of Florida has several other requirements that students must complete in order to gain their license.

For more information on the requirements for licensure in the state of Florida, please visit the state licensing boards website.

As per the website, the steps toward licensure are as follows.

  • Education or Endorsement– For a cosmetology license in Florida, the 1200 hours requirement must be met by all students. If you are transferring a license from out of state you may have the option to make up any missing hours at a licensed training facility. Contact TSPA Melbourne or the state licensing board for more information.
  • Age– In the state of Florida all applicants for licensure must be at least 16 years of age and hold a high school diploma.
  • HIV/AIDS Course– Florida requires all future cosmetologists to take an HIV/AIDS course that teaches future cosmetologists about safe practice and cross contamination issues.
  • Examination– In Florida only a written exam is required. This exam can be scheduled through the state board of licenses.
  • Application– Once all of the requirements have been met the student must submit an application and all applicable fees along with their exam results to be considered for a license.
